Protecting Alpine's Future
My name is Troy Slade and I am running for Alpine City Council. I have lived in Alpine the past 23 years with my wife Shellie and we have raised our six children here and we LOVE ALPINE! I am an avid mountain biker and you will frequently see me on the trails throughout Alpine! There are many reasons why Alpine is the best place to live and I promise to do my very best to keep it that way!
Experience

* I am the only candidate that has the experience serving on the Alpine City Planning Commission. I have served as one of our seven commissioners since 2020. I was initially appointed by mayor Troy Stout and later re-appointed by mayor Carla Merrill. The experience and training I have gained while serving on the Commission has been extremely valuable! The Planning Commissions job is to examine city issues and then recommend solutions to the City Council. We also listen to citizens' concerns at public hearings and then formulate ordinances to address many of those issues. One of the valuable skills I've learned from my time on planning commission is how to forgo my own personal interests, look at things objectively and always do what's in the best interest of Alpine City! With 5+ years of "hands on" experience working on issues with the City Council! I understand how the city government works and how to get things done…I will hit the ground running!* I am an entrepreneur and have built, and later sold two successful clothing companies (ModBod and Heirloom Clothing brands) so I understand business, perseverance, and hard work!* Bachelors in Communications from Utah State University* Masters in Education from Oklahoma State University.* Video/television producer for over 30 years and have produced tv shows like “The Storytrek” which aired on BYUtv. I have received 4 Emmy awards for my work.* Real Estate agent for 25 years
Addressing The Issues
* Protect and even improve the small town feel on main street as well as our beautiful parks, open spaces, and trails are high priorities on my list!* I would like to create an ordinance(s) that will further protect people's views. Alpine is all about the views and it's a shame when a neighbor comes along and builds a structure that blocks yours.* Fight High Density Housing: Traditional high density housing just doesn't fit in Alpine. Ideas have been raised such as adding high density housing on main street. I love the fact that our town has VERY minimal high density housing and I will fight to keep it that way. The reality is, future state and federal requirements may require us to provide more high density, affordable housing units. One idea to potentially satisfy imposed requirements is to make it easier for people to add a basement apartment or those with larger lots to add an accessory dwelling unit.* Safety of pedestrians has been an issue on the South end of Main Street for the past couple of years. I have worked diligently on the Planning Commission to resolve many of these issues but there is still some work to do. I will continue my work on the City Council to address future issues concerning the safety of our citizens.* Heavy Traffic at times on Main Street as well as Canyon Crest can be frustrating. A stoplight and roundabout are a couple of solutions that have been proposed. I am definitely against a stoplight (I'm proud of the fact we have zero). I would only approve a roundabout if it were appropriately sized and enhanced the look and feel of our community.* A new road from Draper into Alpine was proposed a few years ago and as a member of the Planning Commission I played a role in refining the language of our master plan to prevent any future attempts to add a new road into Alpine. As a City Council member I will continue to fight any future attempts.* Our water supply is limited and we need to take greater efforts to conserve and protect it. I would like to put greater emphasis on education as well as enforcing the city’s current watering rules.* As building lots in Alpine become more scarce I anticipate there will be increased pressure to develop our open spaces. Just as I supported protecting Lambert park and played a role in creating its temporary conservation easement, I am also committed to protecting and preserving our existing open spaces and amazing parks!* Communication between the city and the residents can always be improved. I believe it's important to go above and beyond the minimum requirements to notify our citizens who may be affected by a decision made by the City Council or the Planning Commission. They should have an opportunity to voice their views on issues that may affect them.
Conclusion
Alpine has been fortunate to have thoughtful leaders in the past and present who have created a wonderful general plan and vision for our city. I have also played a role in creating that general plan during my time serving on the Planning Commission. I have also spent many hours over the past 5 years hearing citizens' concerns and creating new ordinances that protect all of us and make Alpine an even better place to live. As our state and city continue to grow it may be necessary for some of our city’s general plan and ordinances to be adjusted. It is critical we choose leadership who will protect that vision and preserve the city we all love! Please contact me with any questions or concerns about these or any other issues and I will be happy to answer them. I would appreciate your vote!
